I haven't been able to locate one yet but the June '71 issue of 'Car & Driver' is supposed to have one. If you locate a copy I'd like to scan it for the registry.

The June 1971 Car & Driver article is quite good. It's a road test that includes all four Corvette engines available in 1971 with some commentary from Duntov on various aspects of Corvette design and development.
The August 1971 edition of Car Craft has a drag strip test of a 1971 LS-6 Corvette. Also a good article... Right up to the point where they grenade the engine (this particular car made a recent appearance in one of the Corvette magazines).
I'll see what I can do about getting you copies this evening... My scanning abilities permiting! :).

That's a great article. The car ran 13.72 @ 102 bone stock, and 12.64 @ 114 with open headers, 4.56 gears and Formula L70-15 tires still with no traction. After they missed 3rd gear and blew it up, the parting line was "we felt that perhaps the LS-6 would rather have had it this way. A bullet in the head going out in a blaze of glory at the drag strip."
This article also shows the car in pictures with it's Hedmann Headers and Thrush Sidepipes which Thrush called "Outsiders". The sidepipes look almost exactly like the 69 pipes but were a dull aluminum finish. The headers connected to the front of the pipes via a u-shaped flex pipe. Defintely not the most efficient desgin.
That same exact car was for sale recently in Hemmings with it's CE block that Chevy installed after the road test, asking $49K I think.

Any idea what my L48/350 4sp ran (qtr mile/0-60)? I understand that they were more impressed with the handling and biting of the car than the overall speed performance.
I wonder how efficient my orginal engine is now. It has just over 100,000mi and feels pretty strong, but I have nothing to compare it to.

I thought that the base engine in '71 was called the ZQ4. Is that true? From what I had read, Chevy changed the designation because they used different pistons and heads to drop the compression. Here is the info I have on engines for 71:
ZQ4 350/270HP
LT1 350/330HP
LS5 454/365HP
LS6 454/425HP
I could be way off base here though.

It's funny that the Car and Driver article from June of 71 also calls the base engine an L-48, but it was RPO ZQ3 from 1968 through 1972 when used in the Corvette according to Chevrolet although L-48 defintely sounds cooler. Anyway, these are the times from the article. All of these cars were Coupes, and all were fully loaded with nearly every option available and were in bone stock condition.
L-48/Auto/3.08................15.55 @ 90.36 mph, 0-60....7.1, top speed 132 mph
LT-1/M21/3.70.................14.57 @ 100.55 mph, 0-60....6.0, top speed 137 mph
LS-5/Auto/3.08...............14.20 @ 100.33 mph, 0-60....5.7, top speed 141 mph
LS-6//M22/3.36...............13.80 @ 104.65 mph, 0-60....5.3, top speed 152 mph

I have a copy of that article and live 10 miles from you. email me if you still need it. I have tried to find as much info on the 71 as i can. TELL ME ABOUT THE REGISTRY. Is it for 71's like juliet's is for the 70. I have been an active local judge for the Michigan ncrs and would like to talk to people about some of the things on their 71"s

We're trying to locate and list as many 71s as possible. The site will also list anything to do with 71 models that might interest the owners.
I could put up a NCRS page for your questions and comments so they could comment by email. Or, if you email me I can disseminate it through the membership by email - then they could reply directly to you. I'm sure alot of the members would like to correspond with a NCRS judge. Hi Stan, thats weird about my email but then again its happened before. Those article were the first 1971 ones that I have seen and they are a great addition to my archive.
