Last weekend removed the rear wheels to adjust packing brakes on 81 and found that someone removed the parking brake shoes . Order new packing brake shoes and hardware kit Does anyone have information or pointers that will help with installing of the new packing brake shoe.
just did this on my 72. i assume that the two years are similar. i ordered my rebuild set and shoes from dr rebuild. i loosened the backing plate to insert the actuating levers and remove the retaining pins, used silicone gasket material to hold the retaining pins in place(used tape to hold them untill the silicone set), used dental floss to compress the shoe retaining springs while positioning the shoes(use a match to burn the floss once assembled), and cut a notch in a medium sized slot screwdriver to hook the springs. use the access holes in the hub to reach some of the parts and hook the springs. before starting make sure the spring retaining caps fit over the retaining pins and rotate to lock into position. one instrument that i had that saved time was a curved locking hemostat. it's a medical instrument that functions like a needle nose pliers, but the beaks are smaller, curved and lock together with a ratchet. i've seen them for sale at flea markets. all in all not too bad a job. took about 3 hours.
It probably goes without saying, but it might be a good time to ensure you get stainless steel hardware. If you haven't ordered it yet, I've got an extra brand new set lying around that will work for you. I'll give you a "less than cost" price if you want them
Follow jbn5101's advise on securing the spring retainer pins as this is the most frustrating part of the job if the pins are moving around. Clean your backing plate well and paint with a thin cost of paint. Good luck.
New parking brake shoes have bee installed, the most frustrating thing was placing the spring and keeper on the rear pins. The pins keep moving back when trying to place the keeper onto the pin. So I cleaned the pins and placed wire ties around them and then pulled the pin forward and place supper glued on the pins and moved the wire ties back onto the plates. Also had to open the width of slot in the keeper for the old pins, the flatten head was wider then the new pins.
Thanks! for all the help!
