Default Feeling stupid...

Put 235/70/15 (indy firehawks) on my 68 all around. looked great got in to pull out of the station and heard snap..crackle...crunch. Why didnt I just turn the wheel first to see.....
They are ordering 235/60's for the front now...I think I will have them get 4 all around so I can rotate. They checked the demensions and said they are smaller than the 225/70's that came off...
I almost cried....due to my own ignorance!!!
I put this in the tech section to see if the sizes that were suggested would work .
Thanks,
Jeff

Aren't shops supposed to test drive cars they put new tires on to check for things like that? As far as I'm concerned they are responsible for any damage, and should take the old tires back free.

Your original tires 225/70/15 is: 27.4" diameter
235/70/15 is: 28" diameter
235/60/15 is: 26" diameter
255/60/15 is 17.1" in diameter and was an option on many C-3 from the factory. This size came on my 79 L-82. I don't know if they will fit your 68 or not.

I take full responsability...I thought I had done my home work and told them what size I wanted. I would have normally changed my own, but did not have the time. I should have just turned the wheel before driving.
Damage is about a 4" rip behind the pass side tire about 3" from the bottom. Not that bad just mad at myself for not checking first.
235/70/15 is 6 tenth of an inch bigger......
I will go with the 235/60 on all four....255/60/15 seems a little too low.
I will talk with the shop at least I should get the 4 new ones mounted and balanced for free....
Thanks,
Jeff

With that narrow a wheel, you might pop a bead out during a hard turn.

Do you have any pics of that setup? I was wanting to go with Firestones, but they only make 235s and 255s. C.

The original tire on the 68 (and 69-72's) was a F70x15, which actually is comparable to a P215/70R15. The P225/70R15 corresponds to the GR70's as found on 73-78's. In 78 Chevy switched to the metric P225/70R15 and offered the P255/60R15 as an option.

Yes....I meant 27.1". Boy, that would be wild with a 17" tire. Talk about low profile!! However, 235's will be lower than 255's.

I thought the 235 & 255 was the same height, but different widths. The 70/60 was the sidewall height!

I obtained these tires diameters from specs listed on "Tire Rack". I assume they are correct.

60 is relative to the width. 60% of the width. So 255 vs. 235 is 20 millimeters wider. That works out to about 12 millimeters taller at each sidewall or 14 millimeters overall height. Each mfg has different ways of measuring. Not all tires are equal.

True.."not all tires are equal"; however I was quoting diameter sizes from Firehawks which Jeff (h2ohouse) said he was using.
