I had a shop rebuild my motor and am nearing the 500mi mark. It's a 350/350 motor. forged 10.50 compression, comp roller tip rockers, hyd roller cam/lifters from crane dur 276/284 LSA 112*, lift .488/.509, Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, stock Qjet, Hedman headers. It idles nice and runs good. The question I have is that there just doesn't seem to be much power when I jump on it. Heck, it moved pretty good before I rebuilt the motor and that's with a near flat cam lobe. Now when I jump on it, the carb doesnt' have that screaming wide open sound. I checked and the secondary opens when I floor it. Timing is around 12*, and it's not pinging when I jump on it.
Can the distrubitor not be in right, off a tooth, timing not advanced enough? something is aloof here. There should be MORE power! Thanks, Tony

Uhm..."idles nice" is not what I would expect from a 276/284 cam...you should feel a definite lope in the idle and I would not expect there to be a lot of power until you get over 3,000rpms. As far as I know anything over 272 for a duration and you will need to keep the revs above 1,000 to avoid stalling the engine. Maybe someone that has such a cam will verify this.
I doubt that it's your timing, but if you have a timing light then you should set your timing to around 12º at an idle low enough (700 or so) to disengage the mechanical advance and unplug the vacuum advance (and close the end off with a screw or nail or something). And, when you plug the vacuum line back in you should not see any increase in the timing (if you do then your idle is too high or vacuum lines incorrectly routed). When you first stomp on the pedal the vacuum should max out at something like 56º, but check that sticky thread for timing issues...lars appears to have spent considerable time and effort to gather all timing information into one place.
My timing is around 12* and the idle is around 700rpm. The idle has a little lope to it. What if I increase the timing higher pass 12*? As long as it doesn't ping it's ok right. And what is the sticky thread? Thanks Tony
