I was needing help in hotwiring my '79, but the forum wouldn't let me post, long story. Anyways, when you put the key in, and turn it, usually nothing happens. At all. Sometimes, though, the lights come on, gauges work, and the engine will turn over, but as soon as you put the key back to run, it dies. Have tried different battery, with charger on start mode, even tried to jumpstart it though the + terminal in the battery box, and alternator bracket, but the engine wouldn't make a full revolution, and would trip open the charger. Where do I need to start looking to see why my 'vette won't start?!
Start by checking the positive connections from the battery to the starter. then check the ground connections from the battery to frame and then from the frame to the engine block.
i would look at the ignition switch mounted at the base of the steerin column on the top side. also check the neg. cable where it attaches to frame. just some ideas

There is a small rod in the column that activates this switch. It runs from the key chamber to the switch. It could be the switch as indicated above or play in the rod. If you look close you will be able to see it.
