Default Need Help Locating Part

I just got my rear bumpers back for the platers and plan to install this weekend. I was looking in the assembly manual and it shows a bushing (part # 6263571) placed in the hole were the bolt passes through the body. Needless to say I don't have the bushing and can't find where any of the major parts suppliers have it. It appears that this bushing may prevent cracking the body in some way when the bumper is bolted up. Is this part necessary?

Not sure but I think some may leave it out and reduce the chance of cracking in that area even more.

I don't know if they are rubber or steel but I will try Doc Rebuild and see what they have. Thanks for the info.

Not sure but it seems to me they would help reduce the chance of cracking the fiberglass. They must have had some purpose.

The rubber cushions that Rebuild sells he calls "paint savers". These are placed between the bumper and the fiberglass body panel. These work the same as the body gaskets placed under door handles, taillamps, outside mirrors, etc. and were never used by Chevrolet. The bushing you refer to appears to have been placed over the bolt thread to provide a space between the bumper and the bracket, where the bolt goes through the rear panel. Having said that, I can't remember ever seeing them in any original cars I've worked on.

One of the bushings is actually still in place and I am sure it is original. It has metal sleeve with rubber washer surrounding it. The bushings Doc Rebuild sales appear to be solid rubber. I plan to buy a set of the bushings from Doc Rebuild as the original style bushings do not seem to be available from anyone.

This may have been unique to 73. I don't have an open 73 AIM in the store, but a quick look at the 70 assembly manual shows no such bushing. My 1972 Corvette Factory Parts Book does not list it either. The illustration in the 72 parts book (and later parts books I have) shows the bumper flush against the fiberglass with a bolt, lock washer, and flat washer as the only hardware associated with mounting the bumpers.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. You might want to see if you could find sometihing that would work at a hardware store, or try to fabricate something. Good luck!

I think I will go with the "paint savers" sold by Doc. Rebuild should work fine. I would be interested to know if these are unique to the 73 or not they are clearly shown in the 73 AIM. I appreciate everyone's input I am constantly amazed at the wealth of information available through this forum.
