Default Speedometer

I have a 78 that the speedometer quit working (cruise control not installed). For some reason when the car would warm up the speedometer would work. I have disconnected the cable at the tranny and spun it with a drill and the speedometer bounce all of over the place. Will just replacing the cable fix it or is the speedometer gear in the tranny going also? If so how big of a job is it to replace the speedo gear?

Thanks....

Actually it's more likely your problem is the cruise control transducer. Remove the cable from it and spin it and see what the speedo does.

Do you have a one piece or two piece cable?

In the case that you have a one piece cable, it probably just need to be lubed.

From under the dash you can very easily reach up and unclip the speedo cable from the back of the speedometer. Pull it down so you can work with it. Simply pull the cable almost completely out of the sheath. Using a powder lubricant of some kind...easily bought at a parts store, lightly coat the cable as you slide it back in.

Keep in mind that there is a keyed end to the cable that must slide back into the gear in the transmission so make sure you get it seated when you're done and are putting the cable back onto the speedometer.

Make sure it's a powder lubricant. Tell them at the parts store what you're doing and they'll suggest whatever they have that'll work best.

Once you have the cable back in the car, try a drill on the end at the transmission. This should tell you if the problem is in the speedo or the transmission.

If it runs, pull the side gear out and inspect it for wear. If the speedo is not working give us a call, we can fix it.
