Default engine question

Well I'm building a new motor. Should I build a 540 or spend $350 more and go with a 598? I am building a flat top piston motor I don't know what that will come out to as far as compression but I bet it will be in the 9:1+ range. The way I look at it might as well go for the bigger cubes run it on the easy side and make tons of hp. I was going to run the 461 that i bought and throw some type of power adder on it but there would have been things that would need to be updated. stock rods and rod bolts to start. build a new one might as well build the big one right?

to start it will have my current pro-one heads and i will get a custom harold cam for it when i know more about it. thoughts?

Have a 598" on the dyno NOW, this weekend, Dart block, RHS 320's(iron/marine environment), 10:1 C.R., Comp retro hyd-roller (240/248 x .650"/.650" x 114 LS), Comp 8954-16 lifters, Edelbrock int, 4500 Holley, 2.125" headers.

Unit made 710 HP @ 5600 and 758 Ft.Lbs. @ 4500 with a real flat torque curve for sure. I don't have the sheets here with me, I just remember the "peak" numbers! This unit should last for 10 years plus some!

If you need some serious torque numbers, go right past the 4.250 "arm" and directly to the 4.500" one. If you decide against the 598", I would strongly recommend the 4.375" "arm" (short-deck platform), not the 4.250", you can go "way-down" on the gearing out back.

Not certain where the $350.00 difference comes in, should be same price regardless of platform? Blocks are all the same price?

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. After some initial tests on this very same unit, with a "customer supplied" cam from a "well-known" grinder, I would recommend the Comp line! Swapped the cam (in the dyno room), to a "smaller/custom" grind (Comp) and picked up over 30 Ft.Lbs,. torque. Unit is still bolted to dyno tonight and MAY get some add'l testing Tuesday!

well i was told thati can make 598 with a short deck motor. that is were the extra money comes in custom pistons. 4.600 bore 4.500 stroke. the motor your building sounds like what i want. what do you think will happen when/if i try to run the 435hp tri-power setup on it? can you do it with a short deck block? what about 4.5 stroke on a short deck piston side load?
