Default Transmission experts - need some help

I changed the trans fluid & filter in my DD 86 Monte Carlo SS over the weekend. I found this in the pan. Any ideas what it was? I don't know much about transmissions, but I've been around this hobby long enough to know it's almost always bad news when you find parts in your trans pan! BTW, its a TH 200-4R.

Plastic, looks like a gasket/spacer. Is it part of the filter maybe?

It's been a long time since I was in a 2004R, but that looks like the thrust washer that goes on the OD/front support..

It the pump housing thrust washer. These are selective washers and thickness is identified by color.
Yours appears to be brown 0.177-0.180
I would suspect you have other problems though. I have seen this one other time. That trans came out of a car that hit a tree dead center. It also destroyed the pump.

Thanks for the replies guys. The trans seems to work ok (no slipping), but sometimes it shifts late. Also, the fluid was brownish.

What's the fix for this? Can I buy the part that I need? Please don't tell me a tranny rebuild is in my future!

That trans has issues. If it were me I wouldn't be driving it. You are only making a bad situation worse.

Well, I ordered a tranny kit and the thrust washer. I'd like to think I can just pull the pump, replace the OD clutches and thrust washer and be done with it. Realistically though, plastic fragments are probably all through that transmission and are what's causing it to shift erratically. So I'll probably need to go through the whole thing. Did I mention I've never rebuilt a tranny before? I've got a service manual and some step by step instructions online, so I think I should be ok. Wish me luck!

Follow the service manual and you will be fine. The number one thing to do is keep everything CLEAN, so those little bits don't find there way into valve passages, etc.

Good Luck!

The problem is, the kit will not have the selective thrust washer. They have no way of knowing which one you have. SOOOOOOOOOOO here
You are looking at pump selective washer [Brown}

I ordered the thrust washer too - from those same guys in fact. It's looking like it won't be here by the weekend though.

OK guys, my transmission adventure continues... I got the tranny out and torn down today. This is what I found.

The rest on the thrust washer.

Damage to the front of the OD unit and back of the pump.

Also, the splines on the pump stator shaft are pretty worn.

My plan is to rebuild it and get a rebuilt pump with a hardened shaft. Do I need to replace the worn part of the OD unit?

Also, should I consider replacing the converter? I should mention that I don't think the converter has ever locked up in the 6 months I've had this car. Not sure if the problem is in the trans or the converter.

Also one more question since this is my first time rebuilding a tranny. Do I need to go inside the valve body? There are a lot of little parts in there that I'd rather not deal with if I don't have to.

I hate to say it but.. That overrun clutch housing should be replaced. You really need to go through that trans. Yes replace the convertor. That metal has been every where. You may find more damage. Get yourself a ATSG manual and you can pick up a video on fleabay. This trans is not that difficult.

That's what I was planning on. I've already got the ATSG manual and the trans is completely disassembled. It's all new to me and there are a lot of parts, but I think I'll be OK as long as I'm careful and take my time.

You say it's completely disassembled. Valve body, too? That fine metallic debris is a "killer" for tight toleranced body valves. The VB has to be completely torn down, washed, checked out at reassembled. You must have a good written/illustrated guide on how to do that, or you'll be pulling your hair out.

No, I didn't open up the VB yet. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to do it. Lots of little parts in there means lots of ways for me to screw it up. But, if it needs to be done, I'll do it.
