Default DOT Markings

I was wondering when the DOT markings appeared on OEM tires. Thanks in advance.

NCRS manual:

All cars built after 1 January 1968 must have the DOT stamp. GM began using DOT stamped tires before this, but some early 68's could have non-DOT tires.

Default Re: DOT Markings

The federal regulations requiring tires to be identified as DOT compliant were issued January 1, 1968 although 100% compliance wasn't required until the start of the 1969 model year (August 1, 1968).

As a result, I doubt that you will find any cars with tires manufactured prior to the 1968 calendar year with DOT markings... From January 1968 until July 1968, the tires may or may not have the DOT mark (it will appear with increasing frequency as August 1968 got closer)... From August 1, 1968 on, all the tires should be identified with DOT on the sidewall.

The tires are also date coded although the date coding wasn't put into a standardized format until 1971. Prior to that, each manufacturer used their own system.

Hope that this helps.
