Default Black or Chrome?

Hi,

I'm about to buy s/s hooker headers and side pipes and I think I need 2 brackets to go on/near the alternater, they come in black or chrome, has anybody got them on their car? can you see the brackets from above and if you can is it worth the extra cost to buy the chrome ones? I also have the choice of buying glass pack inserts or reverse flow inserts which ones are the best?

I bought black side pipes they looked really good but very unhappy with them rusting repainted them twice, after 6 months i bought stainless steel side pipes, i love them!

the black ones had glass backs in it, it sounded ok but very poppy like a harley.

the stainless have maxflows from hooker, very very loud, but sound amazing.

BTW its a daily driver, and i live in Florida, allot of salt in the air.

Enersis did you have to buy the extra brackets for your alternater?

I have the ceramic coated hooker sidepipes with stainless steelshields (Stingray with crossed racing flags - very coool!) Do not buy reverse flow inserts as they are very restrictive and will make your sidepipes sound very tame...not what you'd expect from sidepipes anyway...good luck!

Thanks for you reply, When I spoke to summit they recommended reverse flow inserts instead of the glass packs, they said they would last longer give a deeper sound and be a little quieter as the glass packs would be very loud and you wouldn't be able to hold a conversation in the car because of the noise. If I don't have the reverse flows what else is available?

for the brackets it depends on you car's year. the early vettes had the lower alt mount cast into the ram horns, of you have this set up you can either buy the brackets in question, or get the later alt mount that bolts to the heads. note that this will not work if you have the original heads with no holes.

I initially used the brackets on my 68, but they were pure crap, and yes you could see them. but since i swapped out my original heads with a set of brodix heads, i could use the later bracket with no problems

cheers

Hooker max flows with 2 1/2" dia. - trust me the reverse flows are very restrictive and does not give a "deeper sound" and a lot quieter - as far lasting longer I would argue that since this muffler is very restrictive it therefore will retain a lot more heat and heat kills!

How about hot jet coating for the headers and exhaust? It has that nice polished look and will help keep those temps down.

just got mine on this weekend.

went with Stainless Steel. look amazing!

I have a '78 and didn't need any brackets

I ran them open for the weekend. got pulled over 3 times and threatened to be impounded, so I put in the GlassPacks.

the GlassPacks sound great at idle and at full throttle, but just cruising they are a little cheesy.

They arn;t that loud though, you can easily have a conversation while in the car with windows open.

When I ran them open, I could scream at the person next to me and they wouldn't know I was saying anything...at an idle. i loved every minute of it.

IMO chrome looks great when clean and shiny, but they will rust. The nice thing about the black is that they can be cleaned up to look new again just by a fresh coat of paint. I would go with SS if you like the chrome look or if you can get them coated where you live, buy them painted, fit test them, them send them out for coating once properly fitted.

Mufflers= spiralturbos, I wouldn't use anything else.

I don't recommend the reverse flows. As stated, they are very restrictive. They choked my car. I have chambered inserts now. They sound good and the car runs much better!
