Default Auto to manual console ?

When going from an auto to a manual I know the upper shift plate is different for the manuals and automatics. Can you use the auto on and modify it for the shift boot? The other side is just the shift pattern which is no problem to switch. Is there a way to "cut out" the straight auto shift to the size of the 4 speed hole?
73jst4fun is asking me all these questions and I can't answer since I have not done the auto to manual.

Its on a 73

What year are you dealing with? It sounds like it might be a diecast shift plate from a 68-76.

On the 68-76 shift plates, the manual plates have a lip cast into the underside that the shift boot screws to. When the slotted section on the auto console is removed from an auto plate, there would be no lip to secure the shift boot to.

The plastic shift plates used from 77-82 are identical for auto or 4 speed. As such, all that is needed with these plates is to install the 4 speed indicator plate in the spot above the automatic lens. This is exactly what the factory did with these.

.

That is kind of what I remember.
I figured the lip would not be there on an automatic.

On the underside of the auto console there are 6 tabs cast in that another piece is riveted to. This riveted piece sandwiches the 2 slider seals to the underside of the plate. You may be able to save these 6 tabs, but I still don't think they'd be sufficent to attach a boot to.
