Why would someone remove the ground strap from the starter? How would it affect the starter or other electronics? BUBBA IS LIKE RUST ( NEVER SLEEPS )
The starter is grounded through the engine so it won't be affected, however, that is a ground strap for the engine, I think to the frame, which is very important for good grounds on the engine. Replace it.
that cable is very much needed, you are pulling hundreds of amps.for the starter.
without it, gnd. is found anywhere possible, and none of those possibilities are capable of suppying that kind of current. without eventually smoking something.
Install a good Gnd cable to the frame, (battery gauge size)
Had a no-start issue recently and could not find the culprit. After chasing all the wiring twice still had no clue to what was causing the starter not to turn over. There was good power down to the solenoid and the starter motor. This was a brand new NAPA starter. I removed the starter twice and tested it with a spare battery. Worked fine when removed from the vehicle????
Two days later and following more trouble shooting a friend asked me to remove the starter motor for a third time. He examined the mounting area and found a thin layer of protective coating to prevent the surface from rusting. After sanding the area and scoring with a screwdriver the starter worked fine.
Morale; the grounding of a starter motor whether through the mount or through a grounding strap is critical!!!!
The main reasons for the removal of the starter grounding strap are: 1) it looked pretty ugly and "Bubba" didn't want it anymore; 2) it was fried from a starter SNAFU and "Bubba" never got around to replacing it. {Good ol' Bubba....}
