Default power steering control valve

I have a leak on my power steering control valve, and when I wiped away the accumulated grease and grime, I realized that the whole seal and metal clamp band are missing. The seal I am talking about is the external boot and clamp around the shaft that bolts to the pitman arm. Can I replace that seal witout removing the whole valve? I was thinking that I could just separate the pitman arm from the shaft, and slip the new seal and clamp on without having to disconnect all the hoses, etc. Any advice? I hate having to go through all that labor for a 5 dollar part!

Yes you can replace the rubber seal and clamp by just removing the nut and dropping it from the pitman arm but I doubt that will cure your leak. That rubber boot just keeps in the grease. Nothing to do with the PS fluid.

I knw someone will hammer me for that one however; http://willcoxcorvette.com/index.php these guys did mine, and they stand behind their work if I should ever have a problem or leak send it back! that was 01-02? I've used them nurmeous of times, in fact my entire interior was done through them. Great bunch of guys!

You can buy a rebuilt on or just rebuild it yourself. It is a pretty easy job and less than $20 for the kit. "Modest" mechanical skills are required.

Rebuilding yourself with the kit isn't all that complicated if you pay attention to how it all comes apart. The only catch is if your valve body or spool are damaged at all, then the rebuild kit won't do you a bit of good. Unfortunately you can't tell the condition of the valve without taking it apart.

I just ordered the rebuild kit and I am going to give it a shot. I downloaded several documents on the subject (thanks Jim Shea) so I feel well prepared, as long as the 36 year-old nuts and bolts will let go!

That area usually has enough oil/grease on it that fasteners don't 'freeze' in position!
