Shifter Install - Can't get factory bracket out..Help
I'll try this thread with a more accurate title.
I'm putting in a Hurst shifter and I'm having trouble getting out the factory shifter bracket. I have the old shifter out and the bracket un-bolted but I can't maneuver it out. From what I have read you can move the rear of the transmission to gain clearance, but when I try and jack it up the whole car begins to move upward. I'm afraid to put too much pressure on it (just a couple of pumps on the jack); I don't want to damage the transmission. I took out the two bolts that connect the transmission to the cross-member. Am I forgetting anything?
This is frustrating; I'm so close to getting the Hurst in and I hit this lame road block. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Remove the U bolts holding the exhaust to the exhaust bracket. Just removing the 2 mount bolts isn't enough. If the U bolts are still attached, you are basically jacking up the whole car.
Thanks guys. You were right; it was the exhaust u-bolts. I removed them and the transmission jacked right up!! The hurst has to be one of the best additions to my car.

I have to agree with you. I was so happy with the Hurst shifter in my 76, I installed Hurst shifters in my 69 & 78 Vettes. Sure gives you a more solid feel & shift.
