The line from my carb to the pcv valve was dripping gas near the carb. I pushed it in and it seemed to stop the drips, but it really didn't move in too much. Why would this happen?
Maybe the PCV isn't functional. It could be 'crudded up' so that it won't close off [when it should]. Remove it, soak it in a strong cleaner, rinse, dry...then blow through it to see that it passes air in one direction [and seals off in the other]. If there is any question, replace it; they're inexpensive.
please forgive my ignorance but how can raw gas get to the pcv?
i thought that was to vent the top of the engine of any pressure.
i have seen them drip oil but i cant figure out where the raw fuel would come from unless it is leaking from the carb somehow and going the wrong way through the hose.
I just wonder if you have your hose for the PCV connected to the wrong place. Can you show a photo of your set-up. I agree with the above post, you should not get gas coming from the line.
That valve is intended for "one-way" operation. If crankcase pressure is positive, the blowby is directed to the base of the carb for injestion of hydrocarbon gasses. If it happens to be a negative pressure (sucking from the carb), the valve is supposed to seal off. Hence my question about the valve being "stuck". So...is it?
Look closely at the two main gaskets, the throttle plate to bowl (lower one) and the bowl to airhorn (upper). Look for gas leaks anywhere out of the carb. Clean it up to see better. How does the motor run? Any black sooty smoke from the tail pipes?
For what it's worth, the pcv hose on all 3 of my Vettes connects to the front of the carb, the rear hose goes to the power brake booster.
Take the air cleaner off and make sure all of the screws and bolts/nuts on the top of the carb are tight. There are 4 - 1/2' that bolt the carb to the manifold - 2 in front on top & 2 on the rear. There are 5 slotted screws, 4 in the rear on top & one in front.
I just pulled the air cleaner off my 76 & checked mine - all 4 slotted screws were loose.
