Would anyone know where we might find information regarding "survivor" vettes? We have an all original '69 ( in Great Condition too!) and are interested in finding any information we can regarding "survivor cars" and if there are any events or competitions specifically geared toward "survivors".
Survivor is an award given out by Bloomington. The NCRS award for originality (unrestored cars) is the Bowtie award (TM). You get stars in the various areas (mechanical, exterior, interior, chassis etc...) up to 5 stars. They have similar judging standards, but there are some differences. NCRS is as delivered to the customer, but Bloomington is as from the factory (trim rings not installed etc). ~Juliet
lnj, that "Survivor" Award is only done once a year at Bloomington in Illinois, whereas the NCRS Bowtie judging event is done at the NCRS Nats, which floats around the country from year to year. In 2002, it will be done in Monterey,CA. Next year(2003)in Hershey,PA. The car has to be "signed off" at an NCRS Regional by a "team leader" to see if it has "Bowtie Award" capabilities. I had my '80 get "Survivor" this past year and my '74 got it in '94. My '74 also got "Bowtie" in 2000 at the NCRS Nats in Bowling Green,KY of that year. Since I've done both, the "Survivor" judging is alot less "harsh". The judges have to rule that the Interior, Exterior, Engine Compartment and Chassis "APPEAR" to be atleast 50% or greater in "originality". If they think the cars been repainted, it'll fail the paint portion. If the engine has been repainted it will fail the engine compartment portion. You can "fail" one of the four areas and still receive "Survivor", but it cannot go on to the "Benchmark" Award. Bowtie is the same, but alot more "critical" judging. Carb, alt, starter numbers are all checked as is all your chassis components too, whereas at Bloomington they are just kinda gone over. Also, Bowtie judging puts your car on a lift to check the underneath.
Inj,
Just to add to above information; Survivor is a resgistered name of Bloomington Gold. It cannot be used by any other organization. Bowtie Award is the NCRS award of the same type of judging, unfortunately there are no manuals that tell you what you need to do to pass a Bowtie award as there is in flight judging. If you are interested in having your car judged for a Bowtie it needs to be prejudged at a Regional or National NCRS event before it will be recognized as a canidate for Bowtie judging. I would call the National Team Leader for more information.
