Default Factory Alarm

I just got my 78, and the alarm doesn't seem to work all the time. If I turn the key, it just keeps beeping mostly, I think it has worked once since I got her. Any suggestions?

Turning your key to 12 oclock to remove the key from either side is important. If you wiggle the key side to side you can either turn the alarm on or off by mistake. The switch over time becomes over sensitive.

Disconnect the wires from the hood switch. See if that helps. If so, touch the wires together and see if it sets the alarm off and then adjust the height of the switch.

My 76 had the same problem. The wire on the door ajar switch (the one on the rear of the door jam) is where the alarm wire is connected. The wire came off and was grounding out so it was like the door was open all the time for the alarm. There will be two wires a blue and a white one.

Start looking for a replacement alarm system. I'm very surprised that yours is still working. I had to replace mine because the control unit was acting up. If you don't replace it soon then at some point the car will not start because it includes a starter cut-off which prevents the car from starting if the alarm system is damaged or disconnected...it's a nice feature that even prevents the owner from steeling the car!

I disagree, prior to 1981, the factory alarm was strickley an audible alarm. The starter interupt was not added to the factory alarm system until the 1981 model year.

As mentioned previously, check the hood and door switches. The door switches for the alarm are the ones in the front door jam, between the hinges. If your car was built after May 78, you will also have alarm switches in the receivers for the rear pin of the t-tops, mounted in the targa bar.
