Default Headlight Problems On '80 Vette

Hey,

Does anyone know what would cause the headlights to NOT go up
and down? I have changed the vacuum lines, canister, relay valves,
& actuators. They still don't work.

Help,

WH

have you checked the source vac to and from the headlight switch and the bypass switch?

Are they down and will not up or are they up and not go down?

Try running a new vacuum line directly from the carb to the inlet of each side of the vacuum relay mounted in the nose. One side will make it go up, and the other side go down. You can do this on each of the relays to check each light assembly. (I'm not sure if you have one or two relays near the actuators). This will bypass your headlight switch and manual override switch. It should work if the relays and actuators are OK. Of course, you'll need to have your engine running to create the vacuum. Beats having to pull the dash to get to the headlight switch. I did this on my '82 and found that I had bad check valves and deteriorated line off of the intake. Good luck, Amigo!!!

Vacuum Troubleshooting Guide at www.corvette-101.com

Look for troubleshooting guide on the left side of the page. Lots of good info in there. Should help to narrow down the problem for you.

Get yourself a vacumn gauge, it's only about 20 bucks. That's what I used to figure mine out. My problem turned out to be the seals on the actuators, which by replacing yours, you should have eliminated that problem.

That just doesn't make any sense. Did they ever work then stopped working?

When I bought the car about 3 yrs ago they didn't work. I finally got them to work very slowly. Then they stopped. That's when I started replacing lines, relays, canister & actuators. I think the problem is going to be from the carb to the light switch.

check the override valve under the steering column, it should be pushed up for normal operation. if the operation was normal, but slow, before you started changing things, you may ahve reversed one or more lines.

I have checked the override switch under the dash and it is in the up position. I have a vacuum line diagram for '80 to "82 Vettes and have doubled checked it several times.
In the meantime I have the lights in the up position and moving on to another issue. I have a leak in one of the power steering hoses. Have got to fix that.

Thanks,
Wayne

I pulled the line off of the filter and there was a vacuum coming through. I will need to get a gauge to see if it is enough. May have to get a new one. If that was the problem, sure would be nice.

Thanks,
Wayne
