I know you can reach the speedometer cable from under the dash without removing it...you 'might' be able to reach the tach cable from under the dash as well, and then just feed it through the firewall grommet.

Maybe someone who has changed one will chime in, since I don't know if it clips on like the speedo cable or if it threads on like it does on the body of the tach.

Its not easy, but it can be done. I certainly wouldnt pull the dash to do it. I use a long screwdriver and push the clip down, while someone else pulls out on the cable. Going back in is fairly easy. Just guide it on and push.

The 69 cable can be changed without taking the dash out of the car. It is a clip on cable which means you’ll have to push on the clip that holds the cable in place toward the back of the car to release the cable.

Collapsing the cable clip enough to release the cable can be challenging and real hard on your finger. The clip must be pushed in far enough to release the cable from the tachometer and the only way to tell is to pull forward on the cable when you think you have the clip down far enough.

Once you have the cable loose, you can pull it outward from the firewall side.

If you want to see how the dash pad comes out of the car you can find detailed instructions on our web site. I'm sure after you look at these, you'll try it from below!

Be glad you have a 69 with the clip on cables instead of the 68 screw on ones. At least one part of cable replacement is a bit easier on yours!
