I just removed my gauge cluster and the Amp gauge was not hooked up after engine was pulled. I'm not sure how to run new wires to the gauge .The wires were clipped somewhere in the harness. Thank's for all the help lately. A new EGR cover helped my rough cruising problem some, but still getting back fire on rt. bank when i back off.
The C3 amp gauge displays "AMPS", but does NOTread amps directly. It is really a millivolt meter which reads the 'voltage drop' across a specific length of wire in the C3 wiring harness [that wire DOES have the car's current draw running through it]. That length of wire acts like a "shunt" resistor and creates a voltage drop (proportional to the current flowing in it) which the meter then displays on an "AMPS" scale. You can test the meter by touching the leads from a 1.5v battery to the meter leads just for an instant so you can see if the meter needle moves. [note; if the needle moves the wrong way, reverse the leads] Basically, if the meter moves at all, it is likely OK to use. I don't have knowledge of the exact length & size of the wire used as a "shunt" inside the wiring harness; perhaps someone else on the Forum can supply that into. There are other ways to calibrate the meter to your car's system, if you have an amp reading multi-meter. If you send me a PM, we can discuss it.
From what i have been reading i think i wll maybe try and find a volt gauge for the old 73. I bought a aftermarket amp gauge and the instructions looked like a nice fire.

I don't blame you. I guess that's an external shunt on that gage. The really old Chevys had an internal shunt. The volt gage is simpler to install (and understand).
