I'm in the process of rebuilding the front end and forgot which side the tie rods go back on the center link. I assume based on the threads that there they can be reinstalled on the wrong side? Any idea which goes where?
Since the tie rod ends are both right hand thread and left hand thread, does it matter if the tie rods get mounted on the wrong side of the car, or even reversed?
I know where the get mounted on the center link I just need to know which side is which.
OK, a quick look in the Paragon catalog shows....
RH threaded tie rod end goes driver side inner or passenger side outer.
LH threaded tie rod end goes driver side outer or passenger side inner.
It really makes no difference. When you turn it one way it lengthens, the other way it shortens. You cannot install them backwards. One side is right handed the other side ofthe same tie rod is left handed. The actual end will only go in one side or the other.
By convention both left hand threaded tie rods are supposed to be on the outside (connected to the steering arms.) Corvette tie rod ends and zerk fittings are identical inside and outside and differ only by either being right hand or left hand thread. So, when you screw them into the tie rod adjuster tubes you really can assemble them either way and they will work acceptabley.
However, most mechanics expect that when they rotate both tie rod adjusters in the same direction one tie rod assembly should shorten the other should lengthen. This only occurs if you have the same hand thread on both of the steering arms.
The sketch on the top of this AIM sheet helps explain it.
For further explanation on how you are supposed to attach the adjuster tube clamps, you may want to read the following paper. This paper tries to explain the meaning of the AIM sheet. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-co...-rev01mr07.doc
