Default How difficult to remove this part?

Can anyone speak from experience about replacing the part of the tilt wheel mechanism that has the pin that the tilt shoes indexes on (as far as difficulty & specialty tools goes)? I have been into this column as far as to take the upper bearing housing off (several times) but since I replaced the pin with another one and it didn't fix my problem, I may have to replace the next piece back. Thanks. By the way, what is the correct size pin also. The piece I may replace is the cast piece pictured here.

Search the forum for posts by Jim Shea and look for a link to his steering papers. Those papers should tell you everything you need to know. I've noticed Jim generally responds to threads about steering issues so he may very well respond to your post but since the title of the post doesn't specifically reference steering, he may not see it. If he doesn't respond and you have questions the papers don't answer, you might try getting in touch with him via PM.

Get Jim Sheas papers as others have said.

I took a few pictures when I took mine apart. this may help you also. Maybe they will help you.

Make yourself a simple puller as shown below. Basically thread a screw (with a nut and socket or tubing) into the center on the pin. The socket needs to be larger than the pin. Tighten the screw then turn the nut and the pin pin will pull out. It has just a light press fit so it is not difficult.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to make an assumption- bad idea I know, but here goes.

When it's all together your steering wheel is loose, moves up & down as you drive. The problem is those 4 little star headed bolts are loose. Pull them out 1 at a time, clean them and use some red locktite, install them and tighten them up. If the pivot pins are loose you'll need to either peen the inside of the bore they go into, or replace the lower bowl.

From your photo you have the hard part of your steering column disassembled. Remove the detachable flange from the end of the steering shaft. Then you need to pull the wire clip on the lower end and remove the lower bearing. Pull the steering shaft up and out through the upper end. Remove the four screws that hold the support in place. Then you can pull and replace the support.

Supports can be purchased from Dr. Rebuild or corvettesteering.com
