Default Removing Transmission Cooling Lines

I am going to removing and installing a new transmission in my 82 vette this weekend, and it seems like everything ought to go pretty smooth except for the transmission cooling lines. The fittings are tucked up in the tunnel and it doesn't appear that I will be able to get to them with any tools while the transmission is bolted to the car. Should I remove the hard lines closer to the radiator and kind of slide them all out with the tranny until I can get to the fittings? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you jacked up the car to actually try reaching the lines?

I seem to remember getting to them with limited difficulty.

Yeah there is just no room between the passenger floorboard and the transmission to get to the lines on a 1982 with 700R-4. Perhaps I just haven't found the right angle, but it doesn't look like I will be able to get to them without at least moving the tranny down a few inches, and I don't want to bend those lines too much.

My 77 had a bracket bolted to the oil pan that was a retaining mechnanism for the cooler lines.. It would be easy to unclip.. as long as you can see it....
Yha is if your's has it ...

I put a 700R4 in my '79, and connecting the coolant lines to the tranny after it was installed was without a doubt the hardest part of the job.

So would you recommend disconnecting the hard lines near the radiator where there is about 6" of soft line and trying to drop the tranny with the lines still attached? I'm just not sure if those lines will be able to move at all, they are kind of snaked around in there.

If you don't disconnect the lines at the tranny they WILL get bent. (don't ask!). Go to your local tool store and get a 1/2'' TUBING crowfoot
The stick a universal joint in that and a long enough extension to get you some room for a ratchet. That should get them. You may need to use another wrench on the brass fittings in the tranny to hold the so you can break the lines loose. It'll also help if you can drop the back of the tranny. get you some extra room. You'll also need a 10mm to get the TV cable out of the trans right there next to the cooler lines.

Remove the lines near the radiator. When you remove the tranny mount to pull the engine, just tip the tranny enough to remove those tubes from the converter. Put them back on the same way.
