My car runs good when it is cold and when it is warmed up. However, when it is really heat soaked under the hood, it starts to run rough---like it is missing. Can heat soaking affect the resistance of the plug wires? Can it adversely affect the coil? I have checked the ops of the choke...it is perfect. Vapor lock does not seem to be an issue, as I see no evidence of boiling fuel or excessively warm fuel lines. It starts right up whether hot or cold. Also, I run headers. Do you all advise wrapping them? Thanks in advance!
Have you checked the boots on the plug wires to see if there is any heat damage from the headers? I just went through this with my '73. I had new plug wires but the boots didn't hold up to the heat of the headers and were melting. They didn't melt away but rather blistered. At first I couldn't figure out why my engine only missed after it got good and hot. After I found the bad boots, I decided that once the engine cooled down the rubber boots sorta "re-vulcanized" (for lack of a better word) and somewhat re-insulated the wires until temps got hot enough to again begin melting the boots at which time the spark had a path to jump to the header. Anyway, my cure was new high temp silicone boots and heat socks for good measure. So far so good. Hope this helps.
Do you still have points? I had a condenser go bad once and it caused similar symptoms.
ignition system is stock other than an aftermarket coil with a ballast resistor that is wired correctly. (i.e. 12 volt directly to the coil from the starter (hot when cranking) and 12 volt to the resistor (key on hot).

Sounds like the coil and resistor is mis-matched. Put the stock one back in.
