`67- later L72 long blocks are identical and a bunch of them were sold over the counter during the time you seek. They were very popular crate engines for anyone wanting a BB for their hot rod, as an upgrade for lesser BB factory cars, and as warranty replacements for busted L71's and L72's. I don't know this for fact but I suspect that more of these long blocks were sold over the counter than were installed in cars at the factory.
I think geopar is looking for a "numbers almost matching" engine, so over-the-counter blocks may not be his cup of tea. The flip side is that the VIN will not match anyways. Oh well. Life is a compromise. The NCRS group is a good suggestion. They love numbers... and their documentation is enviable.
