Default getting ready for paint

I have a small area maybe 2 sq-in, that is 1/16 in. lower than the surrounding area. Input into the options would be appreciated. Also, what to do with minor chips.

Hi Rip,
Not too much to go on in your question. What? Where? Why? would help. A picture of the area would REALLY help.

Alan

you need to fill it with a skim coat of 2 part polyester filler (i.e. bondo) and sand it back flat. You'll be sorry after you paint if you don't.

Good luck

Alan;
Here are the pic's. The headlight door is bare metal, the paint chipped off should I build up? The other is the T top where the paint has bubbled up. I was going to chemically strip and sand.
Thanks

Hi Rip,
All I'm seeing is the dreaded 'red X'.
Since the headlight door is such a small area I'd strip and prime the whole thing rather than try to smooth it out. I think what you're going to do on the top panel is fine.
How are you handling the existing paint on the rest of the body?
Regards,
Alan

Alan;
Figures I couln't get the pic's to load. I'll try and figure what I did wrong.
The rest of the body is in pretty good shape. Mostly minor chips that I was going to fill (putty or 2 part poly?).
Not certain what to do with the inner fender. I have the parts but don't think I have the skills to match the parts. Either have a shop match them or replace whole fender.
When finished the car will be driven regurally so I was going to take out the rough spots (spider cracks) and paint. I live in calif. so I don't think the car dosn't make it a week without a ding. You should see my friends 62 that he only drives once week on nice days and parks well away from other cars in the lot.
Thanks
Rip

Do not use anything that is not two part. I know this from experience. It will bubble once paint is on it.

Hi Rip,
I'm still not clear... does this car have paint on it or not? Sometimes it sounds like you're talking about chips and spider-webbing in the paint and sometimes in the surface of the fiberglass.
If you could describe just what you're doing, and getting ready to do, I think you'll get some good replies.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks;
The car has been painted over the factory original and that paint job is well past it's prime. Very faded, chips and scratches in the paint.
The chips and spider-webbing are in the paint. Do I try and build up the chips and scratches in the paint? The paint is otherwise solid. There is only 1 area with spider-webbing and I was able to sand that out without getting to the fiberglass.
I would like to try and keep the amount of prep work the paint shop will have to do to a minimum. I'm looking for guidance on how much effort a novice should do on the prep work for a car that will be driven almost daily.
Thanks

Hi Rip,
Well, in my mind this raises 2 big questions. Is it ever a good idea to put a new paint job over 2 existing paint jobs. Is the paint shop even willing to do this, and if so, why?
My understanding is that a new paint job is only as good as what's underneath it.
I'd love to here some other opinions.
My vote will always be to do the work and strip the paint.
Regards,
Alan

No cheap way out of a good paint job. You want it to last more than a year? You want it to look smooth and flat? You want to min. any chance of the paint peeling and bubbleing? You want to add value to your car? If yes to any of this then you need to remove all the old paint and come up from the bare glass. This is a lot of work but makes for a good looking valueable paint job that dosn't look like it was painted cheaply.

I think I'm going to strip it all down to glass.
Thanks to all

Hi Rip,
I think that's a good choice.
Depending on how much and what type of paint is on the car it may not be too bad a job.
What ever method you use be very careful that any tool that you may use doesn't dig into the fiberglass surface.
Good Luck!

Alan

Default Paint Stripping

Hi all,

Continuing on restoring by stripping the existing paint, what material and method is best to use? On my '71, I want to strip off 2 coats, and I don't think using Home Depot paint stripper is the way to go. Any suggestions?

thanks...jay

Hi Jay,
I did use stripper from Home Depot. I was careful to follow the directions, not use anymore than was necessary, and use lots of water to neutralize it. 2 names often mentioned are 'Captain Lee's' and 'Kleen Strip'.
Search this forum for...'paint stripper' and you'll get lots of people's experiences and opinions.
Regards,
Alan
