Default Drivers side mirror - picture

How do I reattach the mirror? The rear hole is too big?

You might have to use a well nut. That is how the passenger side mirror on early C3s is attached.

Maybe you could loosen the bottom stops on the wnidow, drop it down so you can reach your fingers in with a 'fender' washer. That would give the nut something to tighten against. It looks close enough to reach.

Alan

I am trying to find the windows stops, if I can drop the window I think I will have enough room to slip my fingers in there.

Hi all. Please confirm the driver side mirror for 76 is attached using a well nut through the outside of the door to attach the mirrow and mirror is not attached with nuts attached from the inside of the door. Thanks.

Chrome mirrors use well nuts; sport mirrors mount with studs.

Thanks. So well nuts just slip in holes from the outside of the door correct?

That is correct.

A mounting bracket is attached to the well nuts with two screws. Then the mirror slips over the bracket and is attached by a screw from the side.

I may be wrong but that hole looks too big for the well nut that came with the car. At least I don't think the ones on my '69 are that big.

Interesting. I bought some well nuts from Mid America for driver side mirror and they are much bigger than the original holes already drilled in the door from the factory. Instructions for mirror purchased for the passenger side say to drill 3/8 inch holes which are much bigger than the original holes on the driver side. Well will give it a try later this week. Not much room for error here with all the drilling. Will keep all posted.

That's because the drivers side door mirror didn't originally attach with wells nuts. The drivers door left the factory with a nut plate bonded to the inside of the door. The holes for the 2 mirror mount screws, only need to be big enough for the screws to go through, and into the nut plate.

Passenger side doors never had a factory installed mirror, so they never had a nut plate. To get around this, well nuts were used to attach the passenger side mirrors. Well nuts basically work like a dry wall anchor. When a screw is threaded into them, the underside pulls up tight against the fiberglass, locking them in place.

If the drivers door nut plate is missing or the threads are stripped out of it, well nuts can be used to mount the drivers mirror. You will need to drill the 3/8" holes, to use them in the drivers door. You will also need to use different screws in them. Well nuts use fine thread screws, while the nut plate used a course thread.

This pertains to 68-79s with factory chrome mirrors. 76-82s with painted sport mirrors do not need a nut plate or well nuts, because as others have said, those mirrors mount with studs.

Well nuts were used in a number of other places on Corvettes, and other cars too. Besides the passenger mirror, well nuts are used to mount luggage racks, 78-82 security shades, transistor ignition boxes, voltage regulators, etc.
