Dart Iron Eagles
Hello, I want to purchase the Dart # 301-10121111 heads for my 79 Vette. I also have a 962 cam, intake and Hooker long tubes ect. Looking for 375 hp. Anyone have this combo or comments. Thanks, Al
They'll probably do well for you. I've been running these Dart heads.. for a few years now and like them quite a bit.
Those are decent heads but for the money I would consider looking at the Brodix IK180s for less money. What intake are you using, a stock L-82? A Performer intake would be a good choice. The L-82 cam will be OK, I might use something a little snappier with your compression ratio, I'd advance it 4 degrees for some more bottom end and don't forget to recurve the distributor.

I am running the Iron Eagle 200's x 64cc chambers with the 962 cam
You might try advancing the cam as Scott suggested but I did not try that with this build. I do recomend the thinnest .015" Fel Pro steel shim head gaskets to keep the quench tight. If you do that with a stock L-82 flat top you will be right at 10.4 CR and that is cutting it close with pump gas. I run pump premium and have had no issues but it I suspect I am close to the edge. L-48 pistons or a typical rebuilder piston will be slightly less compression.

Al,
Brodix makes some great heads too. If you shop the Darts hard you can get them for less. I paid less than $800 to my door when I bought mine. How can you loose either way?

Also, does anyone not think that 200 cc runners are too large for a 350?

Those Dart heads would have really awakened that Nova if I had 'em on there.

Stuck 200cc heads on a cammed 350 yrs ago and was disappointed,
too big in my opinion. Throttle response took a dive, low end went down. Picked up some midrange but overall a bad choice.

I put Dart Iron Eagle Platinum heads with 180cc runners on mine almost two years ago. I would assume they are still available. By the way, I'm quite happy with them. Got them for right at $800 to my door assembled.
God bless, Sensei
aluminum head for a 426 hemi in 1969 another words they have been making working with aluminum heads longer then any company I know of, they make everything from street heads to every form or type of race head you can think of for chev's also for ford chysler. They are real good people to talk to www.brodix.com phone #479-394-1075.
They also make aluminum blocks. intake manifolds.

You're right, they are available, just not through Summit.
Definitely wouldn't look at a runner size > 180cc for a mild cam street engine.
Looking at the vendor flow numbers, the IK180's are the better buy...but the flow numbers aren't all that much beyond what a set of GMPP Vortecs will deliver.
IK180: 243/175 I/E CFM @ .500 lift
Vortec: 239/160 I/E CFM @ .500 lift
Dart: 222/175 I/E CFM @ .500/.600 lift
I'd see around 370 flywheel HP @ 5000 RPM, but the cam is leaving quite a bit on the table with those heads at .450/.460 lift. I'd look for more detail on your trans and gears, but a roller-profile flat-tappet cam is going to make significantly more power throughout the range - and the springs on the IK and Dart heads (but not the Vortecs) are set up for an aggressive cam ramp.
I generally don't recommend installing a cam anything other than "straight up" for the home builder - if you need more advance, then buy a cam that has it ground in.
Finally, be careful with steel shim gaskets for a top swap. These gaskets typically require a very smooth and flat deck and head surface and experience sealing problems if they're not - and the block won't be on a factory engine getting a top. Great for planning an overhaul where you can have the shop cut the right finish for them, but not a great pick for a swap. I typically shoot for using one of the .028 gaskets out there and manage the block deck to get the CR I'm seeking.

Will the Dart 180 heads be a direct replacement for my 79 smog heads? Will my Hooker super comps, Performer intake, AC and alternator bolt right back on as the stock heads w/ no mods? Thanks, Al

How are aluminum heads cheaper than iron? If money wasn't an issue, which head are you choosing?
