I have a 79 and it needs painted bad. It appears to be cracking through the paint horizontaly along each side as well as arround the door locks.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do the job correctly if I am going to do this myself ?
There are cracks in paint and there are cracks in the glass surface. If the cracks are just in the paint then these areas at least would have to be stripped. I would advise to strip the whole car for the best result, but if the cracks are localized, sometimes you can get away with doing certain areas. Painting over old paint is risky. You never can be certain as to how it will do, but it is considerably cheaper. If the cracks are in the glass surface, then they will need to be repaired before the paint operation.
If you have it stripped, I recommend having it done via plastic media rather than chemicals. It costs more, but preserves your fiberglass and can help prevent more severe body work (helping to save money in the long run).
I am just finishing up my prep for paint now, and firmly believe that if you have spider cracks, there is probably a crack in the fiberglass under it. Sand them out if there are only a couple, if they cover a majority of the car, strip it.
My 79 was totally covered with checking paint. Seems it was quickly re-painted for sale....to me! Looked good for a year...then whammo. Stripped the entire car down to gelcoat using spray strip (yes chem stripper, if not used to aggressively, can work just fine). Getting ready to paint now. It was the paint in this case...panels are perfect. Sounds to me like its is your paint. But you have to get thru the paint to know for sure...or live with it.
