Default Power steering fluid question.

I am putting my rebuilt engine back in my car soon and I am going to go ahead and change all the fluid in the car. The power steering system appeared to have ATF in it when i drained it and i have heard of this being used on older cars . What should i replace the fluid with power steering fluid or ATF.

Thanks

I recommend replacing the fluid with GM power steering fluid, available at any GM dealer. ATF and other steering fluids may work but there are billions of miles and millions of component tests conducted on GM power steering systems with the GM fluid. It is specially formulated to work with the Saginaw vane pump and has special antifriction agents.

I've always used trans fluid, but I see Jim is from the area where GM Power Steering was made! For the small price difference, it sounds like we should be using the GM Fluid. I will use his suggestion in the future.

I concur with Mr. Shea. Although ATF does work, it is a different type of hydraulic fluid designed for a different purpose.
