I changed the radiator hoses & t/stat & coolant on my 350 CID. The temp sender was bad too & I changed it too.
I added a 190 t/stat.
I ran the car for about 15 minutes. The temp gauge reads 225-235
The coolant is flowing inside the radiator & it does not seem to be overheating.
How do i tell if the gauge is off or if indeed the engine is overheating?
You need to have the pass. front tire in the air when you fill the radiator. otherwise you could have air in the system. Would a kitchen thermometer taped to the upper hose give a correct reading?
Where did you get your sending unit??? If you say O'riley or auto zone that is your problem.
You need to get one spec. for your year vett. call ricks vetts.
I have been thru the same delema myself and that solved the problem.
And if you still have a heat problem,,go to auto zone and get a mr gasket high perf thermostat for a 350 chev, that helped me a lot. And it even made the cabin heat much reduced, only heat problem I now have is high speed driving 70 plus the temp seems to climb. I think a air dam under the front will cure that problem, I checked the lower hose for collapsing and it is ok.
Well this morning I inserted a liquid temp probe that I borrowed from a mechanic friend of mine in to the radiator. The guage reads 235 at idle. The temp probe in the coolant shows 165.
I guess I now have a bad sending unit ( AC Delco part from local supply house) or a bad temp guage on the dash.
You should use an IR Gun to get the correct temp reading. As previously stated, part of the problem probably is the temp sender. The temp sender is specific to your gauage. A number of things could be the cause of the overheating problem. Might have air in the system as well. Why did you go with a 190* thermostat?
If the temp gauge is reading at all, it's probably OK. Your sending unit is not calibrated for the gauge. If the gauge is original to the car, get the correct sending unit from lectriclimited.com.

I will use a IR gun & see what the temps are that way. I went with a 190 because that is what the AC Delco parts house recommended for this application.

Ithe IR gun shows the operating temps to be normal then I will go ahead & get a new sending unit from lectriclimited.

This might be a stupid question, but from where do you take the reading that indicates your "temp"? Right near the sender? I get 213 deg at the wtr pump dome, 175 deg on the upper radiator hose. BTW my guage is usually pegged 250+.
Take the temperature at the upper radiator hose near the thermostat housing. The gauge being pegged does not look good either. Do a search because someone posted a real good way of checking the gauge without removing it. Or maybe it was the sender. Not sure. It appears as though you have the proper temperature but an issue with either the sender, the gauge or both. Maybe someone can help with providing a simple way to test the gauge to isolate the problem.
OK :smiles: Next summer when you endure the summer heat and if the temp still gets funky,,,try that Mr gasked T/stat I posted. I put that in mine and it almost made it run too cool.
