was driving my 1977 vet the other night when all of a sudden my dash lights got real dim than went out . they no longer work i changed the fuse but it was not blown.could it be the headlight switch head lights do work.

Yeah that kind of sounds like the rheostat in the headlight switch burned.

I just changed out my headlight switch on my 76.
one way to check is to see if your interior lights come on when you open the door. If they do but dont come on with the door closed and you rotating the switch then your rheostat is toast. Good luck
