Default seat belt question

Hi, on a 76 is the shoulder belt supposed to lock up when you pull it out real fast like a new car? Mine do not lock up. Not sure if maybe there is something else that makes it lock up like jamming on the brakes? Thanks for the replies.

yes, It has the same interia-based system as modern cars. It should grab if you give it a pull. I would compare the driver and passenger side, I don't think that both would have broken at once.

Just yanking on the belt will not [necessarily] lock it up. The belt alone does not initiate any G-forces on the inertia lock system. It was designed that way just so it wouldn't lock up when you pull the belt out. Put the belt on and execute some fairly hard brake stops, you should then feel the belt lock up. If not, replace the retractor or get it fixed.

Not a 76, but on my 79 I replaced the belts with the $300 "replacement" belts. These things lock up every 3 or 4 inches when pulling them out! A real PIA. You have to pull them out real slow and steady or they won't come out at all.

As for the original belts, they pulled out easy everytime without hanging up.

thanks for the replies, I will have to look at them again , but I do not think either side locks up when you pull it out real fast.

Hey, my '72 originals do this same thing, can't move 'em a couple of inches too fast without them hanging up, shoulder belt to! Super pain when both are doing it. Was going to take them apart some day and try to fix....

Default Ssnake Oyl...

...redid my belts and they are a bit grabby when fastening them (shoulder belts as they unwind...). However, seeing as what I had before was horrible I can't say if this is really outside of normal function...
