I'm about ready to start the build up on a 75 and i would like to have an overdrive to offset the 12mpg I had before. Standard re-end with about 400hp and 370 torgue. I don't know anyone who has played with the overdrive unit so I was curious about the drawbacks other than the price. Thanksd in advance for ALL comments.
I reaserched this and found the Gear Vendors install was going to require a good bit of cutting and fabricating, would give less overdrive (20% vs 30% for 700r4), and it was more expensive. The Gear Vendors has a reputation as a bullet proof unit, but I went with the 700r4 and have been very happy.
I went with a 200-4r in my 76. Got it from Bowtie Overdrives. Bolted up using the original cross member...did it all in a weekend. Went from about 12 to 18-20 mpg on the Hwy. Would do it again. Love it.
What trans between the 700R4 and the 200R can handle more torque/HP?
Dave
..... It depends on how their built. Check the options on the BowTie Overdrives site for some info. I'm still planning to get the 200 4R, stage 2 for the mild built 355 in my 80.

The tranny core shop up the road wanted 60 bux for my CORE 200 4r.... then I have about 300-350 in parts....including a new converter lockup valve (don't miss that part on the rebuild, it's not in the kits, and don't ASK, damnit)....a new front ten vane pump, then a converter, and of course a complete soft parts kit, and a nice master/large Trans Go kit,..and NO OTHER, and a weekend in your garage with a nice 4x8x3/4 ply on some sawhorses, and READ the ATSG manual...and you got it dun....
unless you find major damage inside, which is doubtful, you maybe have another 100 buck hard part....maybe....
