What is the easiest way to replace the shifter seal on the side of a 400 turbo transmission? I can't get the seal out because of the tight working area. Any suggestions?
Even though it's listed on many sites, it is not made or available any more.
I ended up ordering one from Snapon last summer because I can't find my old one. $30.00 shipped.
It's almost impossible to not screw up the very soft shaft if you don't use this tool. 5 minute job. It fits almost all the gm trannys.
Or... if the existing seal is driven deep enough, you can drive another one on top of it. As long as the seal lip rides on the full surface of the shaft journal. No need to do anything but add another.
Take a sharp tool and let your frustration have a go at it by prying it off.... Helped for me and it came off easier than I thought. Just watch so you don't damage the shift shaft axel.
BTW. It was the prime source for all the drops of transmission fluid.
