So how do you get these out of the carrier to replace them - they certainly will not pass through the spiders without complaining.
take a look at these...you can see that the yoke tips are worn ALL THE WAY to the c-clip slot - in fact it was a bit of an effort to get the clip off past the mushroomed part - even with the correct tools.
One thing that really pisses me off is a corvette shop that I trust(ed) replaced the drivers side yoke no less than 2 years ago - judging from the equal amount of wear, I find it highly unlikely that these are anything other than the original side yokes. Even though I was charged for one when I had my posi redone at the same time. To top it all off - dont you have to take the yokes and spiders out to get to the plates behind the spiders????
Anyway the question is - how do you get these things out of here so I can put in new ones?
When I rebuilt my diff a couple of years ago, I faced a similar situation. I just used a hammer and long drift on the back side of the yoke. I tapped on the back of the flange where the ujounts go, and they eventually came out. This method basically used the side gears to remove the mushroomed metal off the yokes, but they were not damaged since they are made of a harder material.
my suggestion is a dremel, steel cutting bit and an hour or two of patients. i've done alot of metal working with those little dremels and if you can get it in there it will work. polishing a set of 2.02 heads with one right now.
fauxrs,
I first tried using the "dremel tool" method. It will work but I was bothered by all of the metal shavings collecting in the rear end. This is probably not a problem because it can be cleaned up after disassembly but I ended up using Monty's idea and it worked great.
Clutchdust,
I agree, a Dremel is a great tool to have. Mine has pulled me out of a bind many many times. To anybody who doesn't have one. . . GET ONE!
It should come out with tapping it out. The metal that is mushroomed over will break off and the yoke will come out. It will take a little effort but they will come out.
How right you are - Tapping was my first thought but I was looking for a little confirmation. some judicious whanging with the pickle fork and mallet netted me this.
Im starting to document all of this on my website = suspension section.
thanks for the help - as always - one can count on the forum membership.
