i am trying to finish up the intake swap on my 72BB. I refuse to change the hood so i put on the torker II which supposedly fits under the corvette.
i put a holley 750 for the carb and it is running great but i need to finish it with an air cleanere. the stock dual snorkle doesnt work. a K&N 1.25 drop base with a 2 inch filter and a generic top that slants upwards towards the center allows the hood to close with about .25 inch clearance. the problem with that is a 2 inch filter doesnt put enough cfms in the engine. (its a high flow K&N 2" filter if that makes a difference. i was thinking of getting the top that also serves as a filter to increase cfms but id like to just use a taller filter.
a 2.75 inch filter will not let the hood close with the 1.25 inch drop base.
i have read about the moroso low profile air cleaner. will that solve my problem or should i try the different air filter top since i already have a 2 inch filter.
i am guessing a 2 inch drop base bottom will interfere with linkages and the like.
thanks for the help. this is the last bit before i can drive again.
This is the air cleaner on my small block....it uses a 3" element and is 1.5" dropped......it completely surrounds the carb (Quick Fuel 950) and all linkage. It is an AFCO brand, but Proform makes a copy available at Summit.
the moroso is a 3"drop but the k and n is 2 and 13/16 not 2 and3/4 next the filter lid on the k and n is pointy on the top not dished down.My solution was an accel 2 1/2 foam air filter element.I just e-mailed accel to see if they still make it because Jegs didn't list it.Havn't heard back from them yet, maybe tomorrow. Why do I need a new one, minor fire under hood(oil leak). If they don't make it I have a Mr. Gasket mesh type (round with a screen on top)works well and fits under the hood fine, just like the looks of the Moroso better.hope this helps. No bog off the line, huh?(your last postpeople were complaining about a bog with a torker 2.
i havent driven the car that much or hard yet. no air cleaner under the hood. i have also read a lot of posts where there is no bog off the line. i think it all lies in the tuning.
i think i am going to try and find that 2.5 inch cleaner element and get the moroso drop base and see how that goes.
just got an e-mail from accel "SORRY DISCONTINUED"
i know K&N has a 2.5 inch element so i might have to try to find that one. i have a 2 inch K&N and a 2.75 inch paper filter to go with the moroso air cleaner assembly. the 2 inch round filter with a 1.25 inch drop base and a dome teepee shaped top (cant be flat so it clears the choke horn) will fit under the hood with 1/4 inch clearance at the center of the air cleaner. the only problem with that is it doesnt flow enough cfm according to the calculators i have found. if the moroso doesnt work out i am going to use the K&N extreme top. it should fit since it is teepee shaped as well and should allow enough extra cfm in to make it breathe ok.
i knew this wouldnt be easy but i do find it funny that i have read about differnent setups that supposedly work that ended up not even being close.
Good luck- I hope you find your combo. FYI, a few years back I bought the K&N Extreme Top and found that it was taller than the air cleaner housing top on my Vette and Camaro. It didn't fit so I ended up selling it cheap to my neighbor. You might want to research the height if you can before buying it.
Have you tried a stock GM? They are formed around Holleys and have a big drop. The PVC system tube hits a double pumper on the one I have but it's a midyear and the later ones might be different - especially one made for an L88. Even if it hits you can cut it off and patch the hole.

yes
that is th first thing i tried. of course my air cleaner base doesnt look anything like that one but it is supposedly oem one. the float bowls will not let the bottom of the air cleaner go down far enough.
i guess i could take a hammer to it but id rather not.
oh and the moroso cleaner will not work. the supplied 3 inch filter nope. not even close.
a 2.75 inch filter nope wont fit
the 2 inch K&N fits with 1/4 inch of clearance on the moroso filter.
so now i am thinking of the proform 2 inch drop base.
i am also considering cutting off the choke horn so there is more clearance.
so after days of trying different things my hood finally shuts.
with the moroso base, a 2.75 filter and finally the missing piece an edelbrock top (stolen from the top of my 68 mustang) i have .30 inches of clearance at the highest point when the hood is shut.
can i leave it or should i drop down to a 2.5 inch filter which would give me almost half an inch of clearance.
I have two questions on this topic I always wondered about so here they are.
1, when having these issues with the air cleaner hitting the hood do you all still have the insulation on the underside of the hood or do you take it off?
2, With some of the threads saying that they have less than 1/2 an inch of clearence , doesn't the motor lift up slightly when you get on it?
With 1/4" clearance under the hood, nothing hits when I rev the engine.....but I have an L-88 hood and can look through the back and see what's going on.....your's might have more movement.....but I know others with similar clearance with no problems.
From: San Diego - Deep Within The State of CONFUSION!
I use a 2.5" drop base & a 3" K&N element. Then a finned cast alluminum top from Edelbrock. There are marks on my hood from it making contact, probably on hard shifts. Silly Putty used with engine off, shows 1/4" clearance.
So after a few years of hard driving, all I have is a small mark under the hood ... God help me though if I bust a motor mount!
Another thing to check is the clearance you have from the top of the carb to the lid. If the lid is almost sitting on top of the carb the airflow will be drastically hampered. You will lose HP due to not enough airflow going into the carb. Just make sure the lid is not sitting right on top of the carb. You might have hood clearnace but not carb clearance.
first road test just went pretty decently. part throttle and easy acell went good.
off the line no bogging or hesitation but you can tell it isnt running perfectly. on hard part throttle to full throttle hits it is missing almost so bad the steering wheel is shaking.
i am not getting any black smoke so i am thinking that it is running a little lean.
plugs are not burned but the electrodes are silverish.
timing was also a little advanced so that may have been a factor as well.
in park vacuum is steady at 20 inches.
in drive vacuum is right at 15.
power valve is a standard 65
main jets are a 72.
