Default Oil temp gauge

My 1980 has an oil temp gauge in the lower left portion of the center instrument cluster where the clock usually goes. I 've been doing some interior work and lost track of the wiring scheme. Of the three connections on the back of the gauge, the outside two go into a harness that runs to the firewall. I'm OK with those. The center wire, which is black, is where I got lost. Is the center wire a ground?

Not sure, but almost ALL black wires on a Chevy are ground wires. (make sure it is not a 'banded' black wire with a colored stripe on it; that won't be a ground) Another way to check is to measure resistance between the connector on that wire and a 'known' ground area. If it's really a ground, it should check zero ohms.

Yep. Middle is ground. Looking at it from the back, right is 12 V, middle is ground and left is sender.
