welcome to the forum. My 79 was and still is Bubbaized, Am working on it. Found Gary Gurhala a good source for used vette parts. He has a web site and his email is gruhala@jcn1.com tell him I sent you. He has been fair with me, answered all my dumb questions and given good prices. The forum is great. I figured all that could go wrong with my vette someone else has already fixed it and would share how to do it. Jim in New Mexico
No problem, I almost went non-stock last summer. Even bought the Peformer EGR intake (#3701?) when Jeg's had them for $109.95. Then I was at a cruise night and a gentleman complimented me on the originality of my car. I am not a NCRS person but that comment struck me. And I am not into speed just Sunday afternoon drives. So my only venture into non-stock is the chrome air cleaner lid. But the black version is in the basement inventory of parts....
As you now know Ebay isn't the best place to get things. Put your wants here on the forum first and see what turns up. Gary Gruahla is the next place to look. I know it was confusing for me when I started. How many miles are on your 79? I started with the engine-drive train to repair. (If you don't know that you were going to have to repair just about everything on your vette you shouldn't have bought it!!). The key is enjoy getting things working right or unbubbaizing them. Jim
And it always will be. Granted, you'll have a lot of big things to fix too, but there will be an endless supply of little things. Trust me. Not saying that I don't love my vette though, just that with an old vette (as any old car), there is always something that needs attention.
Paul,
I have been considering going back to the close-to-stock look but maybe with a Performer or Performer Air Gap. Don't know that I really need the RPM but it will be awhile before I get to that point. I figure if I go with one of the lower manifolds, I can go back to the stock air cleaner assembly, at least for looks, but put a K&N filter top on for driving and then change back to the stock lid for shows (if I put it in any). Of course, if I change manifolds, I'll take that opportunity to swap out heads and cam too as I want the power and looks. I'll still leave off the EGR, heat riser, A.I.R. pump, etc. but I do like the look of the stock air cleaner.
Congratulations on the new vette... These cars are fundamentally fun to work and the door handle project is a great introduction. Some tasks are tougher than others but most are done with common tools. I agree with others... post your questions here before heading to the store or the mail order shop... I have found the AutoZone has had most of the more common things like starters, universial joints, headlights, wipers, and such... I have used Ecklers for most of my corvette only type parts. Once again - check here for advice.
One tip - I like to clean everything I have to touch when I do a task on the car - If I ever have to get close that part again I can see pride when I see how clean I left it... On doing the door handle, its going to be cleaning off the putty from the plastic that keeps the wind out of the car and cleaning the greese on the rods that connect to the door handle and latch mechanism... You can get replacement putty and a freash piece of plastic from someplace like OSH. If you are crazy for fixing thing... replace the outside weatherstripping on the door while you have the door panels off and the window out!
