Default ID moly rings - Difference in appearance

Is the top (moly) ring the shiney ring. My box of perfect Circles came opened and I want to make sure they are in the right slot. The shiney/polished ring is in the top box slot and the darker ring (assume cast) is in the second ring slot. Is this correct?

That is correct. Also, dots and paint marks always go upward, and, I find you get the best seal by putting the gaps at 10, 2, and 6 O'clock...as if you were looking at the top of the piston like a clock.

Wouldn't it be best to 180 degree the two oil rings?

This is how I was taught, it may not be the best way, but it's certainly proven to seal well for me and all the engines I have put together.

This is something that gets alot of talk but it really is no big deal other than good procedure would be to not put any gaps on the thrust side. The old "wives tale" that the rings will leak if the gaps are lined up is just an "old wives tale". A leak is a leak no matter if the air makes a turn or not to get to the next ring gap. Also you don't have much of any gap if the rings were gapped correctly. With heat the gap will be just about not there at all.

Ring gaps should go away from the thrust side of the piston. Less chance of a ring end gouging the cylinder wall.

The oil ring is 3 pieces- make double sure you don't "stack" the end of the expander- very easy to do. I usually put the gaps on the oil ring on either side of the pin, and the gap in the expander off the center of the pin on the other side.
