Default choosing cam and heads?

i want a cam with an agressive or mild idle but i have no idea how to choose cylinder heads with it and don't know if i would need to modify other parts to the motor or the trany? Help or suggestions please!

Best bang for buck, a pair of after market Vortec heads. They are usually drilled for both styles of intakes, and they flow amazingly for their affordable price. You can get them used, and drop them off at a machine shop for some minor work and you'll come out just a bit cheaper, but either way the Vortec head is a great budget choice.

On top of that, there are plenty of cam choices that will work great with the good flow of the Vortec heads but it depends on what you're wanting. You into high RPM HP, or do you like cruising around with gobs of torque?

I see you're in Jefferson City...27 miles from me in Columbia.

Let us know what your goals are, what rear ratio, tranny, A/C?, vacuum requirements, etc, and then you'll get some good advice.

Also check some catalogs such as Edelbrock's......they feature tested combos of their products for different horsepower levels to relieve you of the guesswork.

If this is a daily driver, stay with a small volume head. better low air speed a low end torque. if your rpm range is off idle to 5500-6000rpm. Lots of good sbc heads that will fill this bill depends what you want to do? Go speak to an engine builder and come up with a plan, they will know which parts work well together.

Budget is a good place to start here MANY answers, but need more information on trans, rear end, etc.

From a "sound" perspective, take a look at CompCams "Thumpr" line - they trade (some) power for noise, but if you must have a lumpy idle they're better than picking a crazy cam.
