Default 700R4 questions

I've had some trouble finding any information about the 700R4 transmission, or any transmissions for that matter.

-Is the 700R4 an automatic only?
-This may be a stupid question, but does a manual have an overdrive, or is that considered the final gear?
-Are 700R4 transmissions in '82 only?
-Are there any websites that talk about Corvette transmissions, or more specifically, the 700R4?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

-Paul

do a search type in 700r4, and get maybe 700r4.com as one result....

700r4 is an overdrive automatic, auto trannies are completely differant than stick shift trannies....completely differant internally, and externally....
they bolt in for the most part for the same physical position in the car, but that's all....they do the same job obviously,.....

some trannies have two overdrive ratios....I consider six speeds as being two too many....I think a standard 3 speed with one .60 overdirve ratio on the 4 gear position making a 4 speed is the near ideal tranny, wether stick or automatic....
assuming you have a fairly broad torque curve on the engine...if it's peakey and up high...well more gears are nice....

Thanks for the info! I never even saw the 700r4.com! Do you know what the standard manual transmission in the '82 is, if I wanted to replace that?

82 did not have a manual trans, only the 7700R4 auto.

Is it possible to put a manual transmission into an '82 (and all other C3s?).

The cheapest conceivable stick conversion for your '82 would still cost you about 2 grand....and if you wanted overdrive make that 4 grand....about 2500 for the tranny, then you need everything else, and have the grand privilage of tearing apart the entire interior of the car, and I mean entire....
to get at that clutch pivot arrangement, as it's the very first thing they put on the car when building it....you will need a clutch pivot on the frame and a pivot bolt on the engine and so on, OR change over to a hydraulic clutch, which is a PIA to bleed/get working right....
in other words, doing your own work 2-4 grand...having it done exceeds value of car, damn near....in other words....forgetaboutit....
