L-82: flat top pistons, 4-bolt mains, windage tray, 2.02IN, 1.60EX valves
L48: dished pistons, 2-bolt mains, 1.94IN, 1.50EX valves

On both though the heads are crap: 882 heads are junk.

Alright, I'm trying to identify what's stock and what's been modded, so I have a couple quick questions. Did the 77 come with an edelbrock intake manifold? How about the carb? were they all rochester 4 barrels? and my rocker arms are comp cam 1.52, is that the original ratio? Also, I would appreciate some help identifying my heads and rear end ratio... thanks a lot.

Ya, none of that is original. The intake should be a cast iron GM casting 346249. The carb should be a Qjet. You'll have to pull a valve cover and take a look at the casting # onthe head. Should be 333882.

You could either have 3.08, 3.36, 3.55 or 3.70 rear gears, so you're gonna have to go and look at the code on it:

OA: 3.08
OD: 3.36
OB: 3.55
OC: 3.70

Well i'm having trouble getting my pictures online at the moment but under the valve cover the only numbers i see are as folllows; in the center of the head is says NH in big font. to the right it says 1-037 and on the left side of the head it says W in a box, under which it says C07, under which it says 96. I see no other marks of any kind. What do I have? Oh and btw the carb is a rochester q-jet. Thanks again.

Those sound like a nice set of 64cc World Sportsman II heads, nice! Alot better than your junky stock heads, thats for sure. Do you have headers on the car or stock exhaust manifolds?

Ya, I guarantee you're doing alot better than 205HP. You should check to see if the engine block is the original block. You need to look on the rear left side for a GM casting number 3970010.

Just a correction, the 77 L-82 makes 210 HP not 205 HP and besides the comments made above about the internal engine differences which are numerous, a major difference between the L-82 and L-48 besides the HP and torque difference is that the L-82 is a mid to high RPM motor making its highest Horsepower at 5,200 RPM ( better suited for the 4 spd) versus the L-48 which is a basic passenger car engine making low to mid power (better suited to an auto trans).
