I recently finished my 70 vette rebuild and would like to get new tires and rims...Does anyone know how big I can go with rim size??? 18,19,20...and what size tire can I use (the widest possible)...Any help would be appreciated...Thanks
Without any body modifications the max tire width that you can safely get away with would be 265 in the rear and 245 in the front. I actually ran a pair of 275's on the back of my '70 for a little while (they were already mounted on my wheels when I bought them) but I had to lash the park brake cables to the trailing arms with clamps to keep the tires from rubbing on them and even then they still hit the body on hard bumps. As far as diameter is concerned you could probably stick 22's in there as long as you're willing to go with a short enough sidewall, but IMO anything bigger than a 16 looks way out of place on a typical swoopy, chrome-laden 60's car.
I'm not sure on the max rim size but some guys on here are running 285's on 18 inch rims with a 5.5 offset and no flares. My old 81 I had came stock with 255's all the way around.

On rear of my '68 I have 285/40/18 on 9" rims with 5" offset, stock trailing arms and parking brake mountings (brake cable held back with cable ties though)

I run SLP 17 in rims from Mid America that have the correct offset with 255/45/17's in the front and 255/50/17's in the rear (I have 3.70's in the rear so wanted to not go any smaller in diameter). I think you could go slightly wider in both the front and rear but there is not much room. Everything fits perfect right now.
