Default 1970 Neg Batt Cable

When I bought my 70, it had a replacement negative battery cable. Twice, I have bought "used original" cables that are at least 2-3 inches too short. How long should an original cable be? Why would an original cable not fit on my car? Could the ground point be in the wrong spot on the frame? The car is a Feb build 70 with rear facing side post batt.

My first question was going to be which direction your term. were pointed but you answered that. Are the cables going through the correct holes in the batt box?
I bet Wilcox can tell you the length that you need and if there are differences.

Hi MSTN,
I believe that Chevrolet changed to the side post battery late in the 69 model year, so a side post should be the right one for your 70.
The cable mounts to the frame about 3 inches towards the center of the car from where it comes out of the battery compartment and about 1 inch up from the bottom of the cross member. It's right next to the bracket for the emergency brake on that side. Good luck!
Regards,
Alan

I have the side post battery in my '70 but the posts face forward. I'll bet if you turn the battery around you'll pick up the 2-3 inches you need.

Sounds like the ground point is in the correct position. I thought about the facing battery forward but I checked the AIM and it showed the batt facing aft. Did some or all batt terminals face forward in 70s? I've owned a late production 70 and 71 and both those seemed correct with the batt posts facing aft.

1969 side terminal battery terminals faced the front. 1970 and newer face the rear. Be glad you don't own a 1969 with side terminal battery.

Could it be you got the cable for a 1969? I think it might be shorter.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I just got the wrong cable. Anyone know how long the cable should be?

I just had the parts guy at NAPA look this up the other day for my '75. He told me 30" is the correct length for the negative cable.

If it`s a side terminal then 21 inches long will fit and attaches to the cross-member below the battery. Make sure the area is clean from rust and dirt to get a good contact. If ignored, this can become the source of hard starting that usually makes the starter incorrectly the blame for it. All those so called slow cranking "heat soak" replys are probably just bad frame grounds not the starter. .
