I'm considering strokng my current ZZ3 up to 383 cid this Spring, but I wanted a lot of advice before I get in too deep. My first consideration is whether the extra cubes will make it harder to pass emissions (it cuts it kinda close right now).
Second, what will I be able to reuse from the original long block (rods, crank, etc) and what will I end up buying. IIRC, the crank is one of Chevy's better pieces; do I have it reground or do I need a whole 'nuther crank?. Will I have to: get different rods? Smaller base circle cam?
What would you recommend for a cam (it currently has the ZZ3 hydraulic roller, and I'd like to stay with a hyd roller. Is this one too tame for a bigger street motor? (208/221@ .050 .494/.510) As I said, this is strictly a street motor, and I'm mainly concerned with lots of low and midrange torque.
Right now, the engine also has Twisted Wedge heads (circa '95), Hooker headers, high flow cat, Stage II Quadrajet backed by a B&M 2500 Holeshot & 3:07 gears.
Thanks for any advice
You need a whole new rotating assembly. The 383 is a "stroker," meaning longer than stock stroke. You'll also need .030 overbore. Can't tell you on cam selection...call CompCams, they'll tell you a good one.
Also, you'll have to do some grinding on the block to fit the new crank. (And I probably forgot some things too).
Never done it but look at all the options, I see some sb with a lot more ci than 383, some at 434, 427, 415. I wish I knew how big you could go, it would be cool to have a sb 427
