Updating a '76 stock engine and would like information on a good set of heads(aluminum?)/intake/headers & probably cam. Not wanting to set any record sixty ft. times or blistering et's, just want to make it breathe better.
Any & all info. appreciated, Jim

...warning.....some can't handle the lope of mine...I on the other hand love it.
Sunday I took mine to a my friends dad...he used to have a '70 or '71 Cuda (6pack440) he drooled all over.... saying it was so mean...
now some useless info.... "and he loved the lope...he said it was deeper than the Cuda had..he also said the Cuda was claimed at 440est. hp.....but its heavy, and would fish tail easily....he could never race side by side....that was due to the Dana's they put in those back then..411 gears ??? I think.....he kicks himself for selling...they are worth so much and he had every option"
others have done what you are looking to do and what I have done..
many more should post here soon...
An often over looked replacement head is the Dart Iron Eagle 180's.The Weiand dual plane or better yet the Weiand Stealth will fit under your hood w/o any problems with a drop base air cleaner.
Would need your trans and gear ratio to suggest a cam.
Thanks Mountainmotor, I will look into Dart & Weiand.
I also was told the Chev. Vortec was a good choice, but not sure of an intake which would work as those heads are for F.I.?
Edelbrock sells intake manifolds which are made to fit the Vortec heads on your 350. This has been discussed many times on forum, vortec heads are good and cheap, but somewhat of a thin casting which may be prone to cracking if engine is overheated, and votecs require purchase of the special intake manifold, center bolt valve covers and self-aligning rocker arms. In addition, stock vortec springs are limited to about .480" lift, and have no EGR/exhaust crossover provision, if visual smog check is important to you.
This said, vortecs do flow very well, and can make good power, but total cost of all the stuff you need will run the cost up to something like $650 to $700 to install the vortecs, which places the cost closer to other aftermarket iron heads. Aluminum heads will run you right at $1,000, plus brand new.
Thanks John,
I appreciate the detailed info. Looks like I might just go ahead with the Edelbrock Alum. set #6089, but not sure of the proper carb & intake. Most likley an EGR type intake, for square carb, about 700cfm, ...still looking
