Some people actually do fall for that or they wouldn't continue to do that kind of scam.

I got tons of these when I was trying to rent my house out. Except they wanted me to send the extra funds to their 'decorator'.

I got a bunch of them this summer trying to sell my boat. Imagine some fellow I never met was going to give me an extra $1,000 over my asking price, just to make sure I'd save the boat for him. Ya right! Not on my watch.

I have gotten these too when I was selling my 72 Corvette. They always spell check "Cheque". Actually there are a lot of real overseas buyers now as the dollar is worth much less. If you sell overseas there are precautions you can take. Set up an account for this transaction only and have the funds wired directly to that account. This protects the buyer and seller. Don't ship until the funds have been transfered and cleared. Never western union extra funds, make the buyer arrange and pay for his own shipping. If he really wants the item he will do this.

I got the identical reply when I listed my Harley on Craigslist recently.
I replied to them : Go F**K yourself !
They did not reply back.

I would know the certified check is bad and would ask them to just send it then... make them do work... upon receiving it, do nothing, stuff it in a drawer and of course don't even send them a reply or anything... when they inquire, then tell them it was never received, and ask them to send another one... and so on....

I had posted an ad on CL wanting to find local folks with the bigger "motor scooters", like the Honda Silver Wing, Yamah Majesty, Suzuki Burgman, all 400cc to 650cc "scooters" to form a ride group in the immediate area. I received a couple replies wanting to know basically the same details and term of the "sale" as you did. I WASN'T trying to sell anything!!!! Needless to say, I forwarded the reply to CL. I don't know if it did any good or not, but you really got to watch out for these scammers. Stay sharp and don't get duped by someone in South Africa who doesn't have the cahonas to be a pirate on the high seas!! LOL!!! If there is a lot of mispelling and improper use of the English language, it's probably a scammer. Thanks for the thread.

All you have to have is an email address and you can post on CL. Since it's so easy to make free email addresses there is no way even CL can stop them.

While that's true, you might think half the posts on this forum are scams then, too!

Hey I've got a Certified check for $10000 more than what you are asking for the bike. I'll just drive over & you give me the bike & $10k cash. We'll call it 'even'.

...this happened to me also a few times when I was trying to sell my Yellow '80 here on the Forum in the Spring of '03. Said they would deposit funds into "my account" and pick up the car the same day for what I was asking.

...I replied to several of them they get the car and clear title two weeks after they make their "deposit". Never heard from them again.

I was selling my 82 Silverado and an 84 to buy my 81 Vette. I got more scammers than legitimate buyers.
I would never ever use Craigs list again.
Sellers and buyers BEWARE!!!!!!
