Default Calling all pack rats - HELP!!

Here is a little history on this fiasco ......

Last year I needed to drive the vette as other rides were in need of maintenance ..... so I had a leaky RH caliper & wanted to see if a "professional" could get my ebrakes adjusted to actually work ....

So here starts the fiasco .... I take the 80 to tire & brake place pretty close, as I figure it is easy peasy! Kaufmann Tires to be exact. Anyway, they start in on "too much play, needs TA rebuild (like I would have a Tire place work on my TA's!!!), so they didn't want to touch the ebrake (probably lucky as they would have screwed that up too). So to the leaky caliper - it was a autoparts lifetime caliper, so I had them take it off, ran it back to the store and got a new one, took it back to mechanic and left.

Came back a few hours later, paid and left. A few weeks later, the rear starts squeeking - I didn't worry too much about it, but it kept getting worse, so today, I tore into it and found .....
THEY PUT MY RH BRAKE PADS BACK ON WITHOUT THE SHIMS!!!!!
LH side is fine (with shims), and I cannot buy them without buying pads!

I called the place, but don't have much hope they will help me, so IF ANYONE has an extra set (2) shims that will fit 80, I would be forever grateful!!!!

are you just talking about that coated backing plate that goes between the pad and the pistons? they're nice to have and all but you don't absolutely have to have them. most parts stores sell this glue like stuff you put on the back of the pad that seals it to the pistons. that should get rid of your squeaking, at least for a while. you may have to reapply once or twice over the life of a set of pads.
if i'm wrong about what you're talking about, please clarify.

Default You are correct

It is the metal (teflon?) backing pad .... I am just wondering if since my pads on LH side still have them, and never any squeeks, would it not be better to find someone that maybe has an old set that they held on to when changing brakes, than to use the blue sticky stuff .....

Also, I was thinking that maybe I could switch pads so that I would have 1 with shim on both rear calipers but did not know if I should put them as inner or outer pad, and have other "sticky'd".

The pads are all same size thickness, appear straight and should work alright like that, but still little unsure ....

well, if they replaced the rotors and didn't turn them on the T/A's, they screwed you. your brakes will likely be soft in a few thousand miles anyway.
the teflon shim is nice to have and it's much cleaner than the brake "goo" but it doesn't work any differently. i've run on several occasions both ways, with and without. it won't make any real difference if all you're looking for is quite brakes.

Default Other shims

I happen to have a couple of shims off another car that I was thinking about grinding/bending to fit ...... they are little smaller but if I glue them down I think they are wide enough to cover both caliper pistons ......

What should I use to glue them to back of pad???

Clutch - the rotors were already on car, they didn't do any of that work (thank god).

You could use some of that blue anti squeek stuff they use for the back of the pads to hold the shims on.

Alright then..... put it all back together, one side with shims, the other side with the BLUE BRAKE GOO ..... Let it cure on pads for about 20-30 mins before putting pads back on ...

Will test it all out manana' .......

Lesson Learned - don't let others do any work on your car that YOU COULD HAVE DONE YOURSELF ...... never again, I promise .....
